James To Kun-sun was a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council between 1991 and 2020. When first elected in 1991, To became Hong Kong’s youngest legislator at the time. To was actively involved in the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, and founded the United Democrats of Hong Kong, the first major pro-democracy party in Hong Kong, in 1990. To played a key role in bringing international standards of human rights and justice to Hong Kong.
In November 2020, To resigned from the Legislative Council in protest of the disqualification of four of his colleagues. In January 2021, To was one of the 53 pro-democracy politicians who was arrested for participating in the unofficial primary elections. (Photo: HKFP)
