Ventus Lau Wing-hong has been active in politics since he was a student. In early 2014, Lau was invited to join the pro-democracy Neo Democrats by his secondary school teacher Roy Tam Hoi-pong. While studying at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Lau founded the ‘CUHK Local Society’ dedicated to the promotion of greater autonomy for Hong Kong. He was also the community officer of Pok Hong in Sha Tin, dedicated to community services in the district. 

Lau ran for a seat in the Hong Kong Legislative Council in 2018 but was disqualified for supporting an independent Hong Kong on his Facebook page. In 2019, he led a march to deliver letters to local G-20 consulates urging global intervention against the extradition bill. Lau was arrested in January 2021 for participating in the “35+” unofficial primary elections in July 2020.
