Hendrick Lui Chi-hang established a Christian-oriented pro-democracy political group in 2016 to encourage Christians in Hong Kong to engage in politics. Lui ran in the District Council elections in 2015, 2016 and 2019.
In January 2021, Lui was arrested for participating in the “35+” unofficial primary elections in July 2020. Lui was also arrested for taking part in pro-democracy demonstrations in 2020, 2019 and 2017. In March 2020, Lui was arrested for holding a sign remembering the 7.21 Yuen Long MTR Station Attacks and was fined HK$1,000. He was arrested after questioning riot police and government workers who were removing posters from the ‘Lennon Wall’ outside the Fanling MTR station in 2019. In July 2017, Lui was arrested at the Hong Kong-Shenzhen border and taken to mainland China without going through mainland Chinese immigration. He was detained in Shenzhen for a solo protest in which he read out a manifesto on the busy Lo Wu border bridge. (Photo: Hendrick Lui’s Facebook Page)
