Euro News: EU is not doing enough

Hong Kong saw a further serious crackdown on dissent from Beijing today (16 April 2021) as 9 pro-democracy activists were sentenced to up to 18 months in prison for one of the biggest protests in 2019 in the city.

Talking to Euronews, Benedict Rogers, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Watch said that these sentences will provoke even more outrage at Beijing’s broken promises. The Chinese Communist Party regime has repeatedly torn up its promises under an international treaty to protect Hong Kong's basic freedoms and way of life, he added.

On the escalating tension between China and Western governments, Ben said that the EU is not doing enough and needs to do much more in terms of sanctions and stopping the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment with China until Beijing behaves in a way that is more respectful if its international agreements, the rights of its own people and less aggressive on the world stage.
