BBC World News: We will see worse to come
Today (16 April 2021), one of Hong Kong's most high profile pro-democracy activists Jimmy Lai was sentenced to a total of 15 months in prison for his role in the city's protests in 2019 and is now charged with more National Security Law offences.
Benedict Rogers, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Watch said that Jimmy Lai is the prime target of the Chinese Communist Regime because he's the owner of the only pro-democracy newspaper left in Hong Kong and we will see worse to come after his trials today.
On how much longer the independence of the judiciary will be taken as a given while Beijing has required members of the Legislative Council in Hong Kong and holders of the high office to swear oaths of loyalty to China, Ben commented: "Not very long as Beijing has clearly indicated that they expect the judiciary to 'do their bidding'.
