Hong Kong Watch Canada

After successfully advocating for the “Young Talents Scheme” which has now been adopted by the Canadian government, Hong Kong Watch is looking to establish a permanent presence in Canada.

It is estimated that over 100,000 Hong Kongers will move to Canada in the next few years. We will build on our existing advocacy relationships in the Canadian Parliament, government, media and think-tanks, expand our capacity and employ staff based in Ottawa.  We need your support to make this happen.

With your help, Hong Kong Watch Canada will:

  • Continue to follow up with the “Young Talents Scheme” to ensure the policy is a success.

  • Push for two further new policies to help Hong Kongers become Permanent Residents, with details to be announced later this year.

  • Communicate with Hong Kongers and understand the needs of new Hong Kong Immigrants and advise the government.

  • Focus on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s infiltration and intimidation in the Hong Kong Community. We will work with Parliamentarians and government to ensure the safety and security of Hong Kong Canadians at universities and in the local community.

  • Continue to push Canadian Parliamentarians to introduce Magnitsky sanctions against Chinese and Hong Kong officials guilty of human rights violations and go further by advocating for the Canadian Government to screen investments to ensure public and private investment funds are not funding the CCP’s repression.

  • Create a Canada-China policy group with Canada Parliamentarians to take swift actions. We will connect Canadian Parliamentarians with like-minded US Congressmen and international Parliamentarians around the world to ensure a coordinated strategy and actions when it comes to responding effectively to the crisis in Hong Kong.

Our track record of success

  • We have turned the impossible into reality. After years of hard work, we have successfully advocated for BNOs in the UK and worked closely with the UK government on the new BNOs visa scheme. This scheme can help millions of Hongkongers who need a refuge in the UK.

  • We proposed the ‘Young Talents Scheme’ to the Canadian Government and it was adopted. This new policy will help a hundred thousand young Hongkongers to work and live in Canada.

  • We have also worked with the Australian Government to develop a bespoke student lifeboat policy for Hong Kongers. We are currently advocating for the EU, US, and New Zealand to introduce similar schemes.

  • We have worked with allies in the US Congress to help draft and pass the “Hong Kong Autonomy Act”, sanctioning individuals and companies responsible for undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy. We have been a vocal voice for Magnitsky sanctions with allies in the UK, Canada, and EU Parliaments as well, including getting our sanctions list incorporated into the EU Parliament’s recent motion on Hong Kong.

  • We have successfully campaigned for the suspension of extradition treaties with Hong Kong in Canada, New Zealand, USA, UK, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and France.

  • We organised the largest international statement condemning the introduction of the National Security Law, signed by 904 parliamentarians and policymakers from 43 countries. Coordinated an international letter from 155 parliamentarians from 18 countries to put pressure on the Beijing government and Carrie Lam to intercede in the case of the 12 HK youths detained in China.
