Hong Kong Watch concludes trip to San Francisco Bay Area

Last week, Hong Kong Watch’s co-founder and Chair of Trustees Aileen Calverley, along with Policy and Strategy Advisor Ray Wong, visited the San Francisco Bay Area to engage with the local Hong Kong community and participate in two seminars. These well-attended events promoted in-depth discussions about the current international situation, as well as interactions and connections among the Hong Kong diaspora community. Hong Kong Watch expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the Hong Kong community in the Bay Area for their warm hospitality.

On Friday, Ray Wong and Aileen Calverley spoke at a seminar focusing on the escalating geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific. The event was co-hosted by the Hong Kong Affairs Association of Berkeley and the Institute of International Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and attracted around 30 participants. Ray and Aileen provided an in-depth analysis of the impact of the potential conflict between China and Taiwan, and discussed the far-reaching effects on the US economy. They pointed out that these conflicts could lead to a breakdown of trade networks, disruptions in supply chains, and instability in global markets, while emphasizing the importance of strengthening cooperation with EU allies. Additionally, they revealed Hong Kong’s critical role as a financial infrastructure in resisting external aggression, which sparked enthusiastic discussions among the attendees. Hong Kong Watch is grateful to the Hong Kong Affairs Association of Berkeley and the Institute of International Studies for their arrangements that made this seminar a success.

Following that, Ray Wong and Aileen Calverley attended a community event hosted by the US HongKongers Club on Saturday. Over 50 Hong Kongers living in the US gathered at the Bay Area HongKonger Community Center to hear from Ray as he shared his life in Germany, his path of resistance, as well as his activism and advocacy efforts, and introduced Hong Kong Watch’s blueprint in the US. Aileen moderated the event, encouraging attendees to explore ways to connect and integrate Hong Kong organizations to jointly promote relevant issues and deepen collaboration among these organizations.

The US HongKongers Club and the Bay Area HongKonger Community Center hosted two dinner gatherings, with around 30 friends attending each night. In a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, participants shared their immigration stories, encouraged each other, and explored in depth opportunities for future collaboration with other overseas Hong Kong organizations. Hong Kong Watch extends its special thanks to the US HongKongers Club and the Bay Area HongKonger Community Center for their meticulous arrangements.

The trip to the San Francisco Bay Area was a resounding success. We look forward to engaging with the Hong Kong community in the Bay Area again in the near future for further interaction and cooperation. Once again, thank you to all the organizers for their hard work.
