Joint statement from former and current Canadian parliamentarians on the arrest warrants and bounties by Hong Kong government on Canadian citizens
Today, a cross-party group of 8 former and current Canadian parliamentarians have issued the below joint statement on the arrest warrants and bounties by the Hong Kong government on Canadian citizens.
We condemn the arrest warrants and bounties issued by the Hong Kong government for Canadian citizens Joseph Tay and Victor Ho. No Canadian should be threatened by a foreign government under the National Security Law, which Canada has recognized as being in violation of basic human rights. Transnational repression has no place in Canada.
Last week, Hong Kong Secretary for Security Chris Tang issued arrest warrants with HK$1 million bounties for two exiled Hong Kongers who now peacefully advocate for democracy in Canada. Joseph Tay is a former TVB actor and co-founded the NGO ‘HongKonger Station’ which provides “uncensored information”, based in Canada. Victor Ho is a YouTuber and also based in Canada.
These latest arrest warrants and bounties follow two previous rounds in 2023, with the total number of 19 exiled Hong Kongers with arrest warrants and bounties around the world.
The signatory list is as follows (in alphabetical order):
James Bezan MP
The Honourable Irwin Cotler
Senator Leo Housakos
Tom Kmiec MP
Jenny Kwan MP
Melissa Lantsman MP
Shuvaloy Majumdar MP
Former Senator Jim Munson
