Hong Kong Watch announces new Canadian Patrons

Hong Kong Watch is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Patrons in Canada, Shuvaloy Majumdar MP and Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe MP.

Shuvaloy Majumdar has represented the Conservative Party of Canada in Parliament and has been serving as the Member of Parliament for Calgary Heritage since 2023. As a member of the International Human Rights Subcommittee (SDIR), Mr Majumdar brings extensive expertise in international human rights, and in connection with that, foreign policy, national security, and international business issues, making him an invaluable asset to our organization.

Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe has represented the Bloc Québécois in Parliament and has been serving as a Member of Parliament for Lac-Saint-Jean since 2019. As the Vice-Chair of the International Human Rights Subcommittee (SDIR) and the Vice-Chair of the Citizenship and Immigration Committee (CIMM), Mr Brunelle-Duceppe has consistently championed human rights initiatives, supporting emancipation and democracy movements from the very beginning of his political career.

Mr Majumdar and Mr Brunelle-Duceppe join a distinguished group of Hong Kong Watch Patrons in Canada, including former Minister of Justice and Attorney General Irwin Cotler, Melissa Lantsman MP, James Bezan MP, Senator Leo Housakos, Garnett Genuis MP, Cathay Wagantall MP, and former Senator Jim Munson. We also remember the late David Kilgour, a former Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific, and one of Hong Kong Watch’s first international Patrons.

Shuvaloy Majumdar MP, Member of the International Human Rights Subcommittee, said:

“Beijing’s brutal crackdown on Hong Kongers has shattered lives, eroded individual freedoms, and imperilled stability. Hong Kong Watch has been a powerful force, rallying leaders around the world to stand against oppression and for freedom. Honoured to join them in their mission as a Patron.”

Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe MP, Vice-Chair of the International Human Rights Subcommittee and Vice-Chair of the Citizenship and Immigration Committee, said:

“I’d like to thank Hong Kong Watch for giving me this opportunity. It is both an honor and a privilege to become Hong Kong Watch’s Patron, given all the organization’s work in favor of democracy and justice. I will fulfill this role with diligence and the same determination that has guided my actions since the beginning, in support of vulnerable populations and the defense of human rights issues.”

Aileen Calverley, co-founder and Chair of Trustees of Hong Kong Watch, said:

“As Chair of Hong Kong Watch, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Shuvaloy Majumdar MP and Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe MP on their appointment as our new Patrons. Their unwavering commitment to the principles of human rights and democracy resonates profoundly with our people and mission. We are honored to collaborate with such esteemed parliamentarians who share our dedication to advocating for the people of Hong Kong during these challenging times.”

Our Canadian Patrons are joined by a diverse array of international Patrons from the UK, EU, and US, underscoring our commitment to a non-partisan approach. In the UK, our Patrons include the last Governor of Hong Kong, Lord Patten of Barnes; former UK Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind, KC; Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws – Helena Kennedy, KC; Sarah Champion MP; Alistair Carmichael MP; barrister Sir Geoffrey Nice, KC; Lord Alton of Liverpool; and Fiona Bruce, the former UK Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief. In the EU, our Patrons include Miriam Lexmann MEP and Frank Müller-Rosentritt MdB. In the US, we have former US Ambassador to Myanmar Derek Mitchell and former US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback.

We are excited about the contributions that Shuvaloy Majumdar MP and Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe MP will bring to our mission and look forward to their leadership in advocating for the rights and freedoms of those in Hong Kong and in the diaspora.
