Canadian House of Commons unanimously calls for the release of the Hong Kong 47

The Canadian House of Commons adopted a motion on 4 June 2024, the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, to “call upon the Hong Kong authorities to release the Hong Kong 47 and cease prosecuting them and others charged under the National Security Law.” The motion was tabled by Jenny Kwan MP, and adopted by unanimous consent. 

Speaking in the Canadian Parliament, Jenny Kwan MP said, “Today is the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre. What is unfolding in Hong Kong, is what many HongKongers call Tiananmen Massacre 2.0.” She then presented the text of the motion as follows:

“That, given that, 

The Hong Kong 47 stands for so many of the values shared by Canadians, most importantly democracy, respect for the rule of law, and standing up for what is right,

The Hong Kong 47 participated in lawful election primaries in 2020,

14 pro-democracy figures from the Hong Kong 47 were found guilty of subversion under the National Security Law,

the House call upon the Hong Kong authorities to release the Hong Kong 47 and cease prosecuting them and others charged under the National Security Law.”

This motion follows last week’s conviction of fourteen pro-democracy legislators and aspiring legislators for alleged subversion under the Hong Kong National Security Law for organising and participating in “unofficial” primary elections for the Hong Kong Legislative Council in July 2020.

“Hong Kong Watch thanks Jenny Kwan MP for raising this motion denouncing the sham trial and predisposed verdict of the 47 democrats in Hong Kong. Thank you to all the Members of Parliament who unanimously supported this motion. Other government officials and Members of Parliament should join these MPs in condemning the verdict of the trial, and the international community should note that business is not as usual in Hong Kong.”

加拿大眾議院一致通過動議呼籲釋放香港47人

加拿大眾議院在「六四」35週年當日（即2024年6月4日）通過動議，呼籲香港當局釋放香港47人，並停止起訴他們及其他被指控干犯《國家安全法》的人士。這項動議由國會議員關慧貞 Jenny Kwan MP提出，並獲全體議員一致同意通過。

47名民主派人士因2020年7月組織及參與香港立法會初選，被控違反《國安法》，當中14名被告上星期被裁定「串謀顛覆國家政權」罪成。

香港監察加拿大政策顧問Katherine Leung表示：

「香港監察感謝國會議員關慧貞 Jenny Kwan MP提出這項動議，譴責對香港47名民主派人士子虛烏有的審訊和先入為主的裁決。感謝全體國會議員一致支持這項動議。其他政府官員和國會議員應加入這些議員的行列，齊聲譴責審訊的裁決，國際社會亦應注意，香港不能一切如常。」
