Hong Kong Watch collects signatures for House of Commons petition at HongKonger Community Centre in Toronto
During a visit to Canada from the UK, Hong Kong Watch’s co-founder and Chief Executive Benedict Rogers and Director of Policy and Advocacy Sam Goodman attended an event at the HongKonger Community Centre (HKCC) in Toronto on 27 May. The event attracted over 100 participants.
Sam hosted the Hong Kong Watch Canada roundtable discussion on issues such as access to Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) and obtaining Certificates of No Criminal Conviction (CNCC) for overseas Hong Kongers. The discussion was joined by Hong Kong Watch Patron and Parliamentarian Garnett Genuis MP.
Hong Kongers in Canada raised their concerns with Garnett Genuis MP that the requirement to obtain CNCC poses an obstacle to applying for permanent residency through Stream B, and urged him to inquire into the issue. Additionally, Garnett Genuis MP introduced the C-281 International Human Rights Act.
Hong Kong Watch also successfully collected signatures for a petition supported by Tom Kmiec MP on the issue of applying for CNCC. This petition is scheduled to be discussed in the House of Commons, where the issue will be raised with the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.
During the event, Ben also shared his experience of meeting with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in India. He remarked on the rare opportunity to exchange with this great spiritual leader, and described the wisdom and compassion of the Dalai Lama, as well as his contribution to world peace and human progress.
The launch of Hong Kong Watch Canada will be hosted by Parliamentarians and Hong Kong Watch Patrons.
香港監察出席多倫多香港人社區中心活動並成功收集國會聯署簽名
香港監察共同創辦人兼行政總監羅傑斯 Benedict Rogers和政策及倡議總監Sam Goodman上週六由英國到訪加拿大，出席多倫多香港人社區中心活動，活動有過百人參加。
Sam主持了「加拿大香港監察圓桌」，討論移民海外港人強積金（MPF）及香港良民證的問題，與會者包括香港監察贊助人、加拿大國會議員Garnett Genuis MP。
在加港人向MP Genuis提出良民證要求對循Stream B申請永久居留權構成的障礙，希望議員能夠關注並應對這個問題。此外，MP Genuis介紹了《C-281國際人權法案》。
香港監察成功收集由國會議員Tom Kmiec MP贊助、針對良民證問題的聯署簽名。聯署將排期呈上國會辯論，屆時MP Kmiec將向移民部長提出有關問題。
羅傑斯分享了他在印度會見達賴喇嘛的經歷。他表示能夠與這位偉大的精神領袖交流是非常難得的機會，並描述了達賴喇嘛的智慧和慈悲，以及對世界和平和人類進步的貢獻。
