HongKonger Community Centre co-hosts Hong Kong-Taiwan community dinner in Toronto
The HongKonger Community Centre (HKCC) in Toronto and Global Taiwanese Medical Alliance (GTMA) in Canada hosted a Lunar New Year banquet to build friendship between the Hong Kong and Taiwanese communities in Toronto on Sunday, 5 February 2023. Nearly 300 people from Hong Kong and Taiwan attended the event, celebrating Lunar New Year together.
Multiple Canadian lawmakers joined them in support of both communities, including Leader of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre MP, Hong Kong Watch’s Patron Senator Leo Housakos (Conservative), Hong Kong Watch’s Patron and Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party Melissa Lantsman, Philip Lawrence MP (Conservative), Jenny Kwan MP (NDP) and Salma Zahid MP (Liberal). They all expressed their support for Canada’s lifeboat scheme for Hong Kong. Pierre Poilievre MP recognised Hong Kong immigrants’ contributions to the Canadian economy.
Taipei City Councilor Miao Poya visited Toronto from Taiwan and attended the dinner. She shared with Hong Kongers how Taiwanese built a community overseas. There were also a variety of activities such as Hong Kong and Taiwan history quizzes and singing performances to promote the cultural exchange between the Hong Kong and Taiwanese communities.
