Hong Kong Watch concludes visit to Taiwan
Last week, Hong Kong Watch Research and Policy Advisor Anouk Wear and Policy Advisor Katherine Leung visited Taiwan, where they gave a presentation on digital rights at the China In The World Conference organised by Doublethink Lab and met with representatives from civil society and government in Taiwan. Their visit follows that of Hong Kong Watch’s co-founder and Chief Executive Benedict Rogers to Taiwan in September.
Hong Kong Watch is delighted to be expanding its outreach to Hong Kongers in Taipei, as well as with Taiwanese civil society, and the Taiwanese government.
Hong Kong Watch attended the China in the World Conference where our team gave a presentation on digital rights in Hong Kong, how they are impacted by the National Security Law and the sedition law, and how this influences global narratives related to Hong Kong and China.
On 4 December, the Hong Kong Watch team visited the Jiu Yue dim sum restaurant 九月茶餐廳 which is a Hong Konger owned restaurant in Taipei and part of the ‘yellow economic circle’, which seeks to promote the Hong Kong movement and Hong Kong culture. The Hong Kong Watch team also met with members of the Ji-nan Church congregation and Pastor Huang Tsung-sen, to discuss the needs of Hong Kongers in Taipei and how Taiwanese civil society is supporting them.
The delegation also met with Chi Hui-Jung, Commissioner of National Human Rights Commission and Ombudsman of Control Yuan. Commissioner Chi shared her research regarding the human rights violations faced by Hong Kongers in Taiwan, government policies for Hong Kongers, and further actions to assist Hong Kongers. She also outlined Taiwan’s efforts to abide by the standards of international human rights laws, despite not being a part of the United Nations.
Hong Kong Watch participated in the When Hong Kong Studies G conference at Academia Sinica in Taipei, where they met with scholars from Hong Kong to hear about the latest research on Hong Kong politics, society, and culture.
Hong Kong Watch’s team also attended an exhibition of Hong Kong protest artwork, organised by the Japan Hong Kong Democracy Alliance and Lady Liberty Hong Kong. Our team was pleased to see support for Hong Kong culture in Taipei, and meet with more members of the diaspora.
Benedict Rogers, our co-founder and Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted that my colleagues, Anouk Wear and Katherine Leung, travelled to Taiwan on behalf of Hong Kong Watch, met with representatives of the Hong Kong diaspora in Taiwan, engaged with representatives of Taiwanese civil society, contributed to the important “China In the World” conference in Taipei and enhanced our advocacy with the Taiwanese government. Taiwan is an important, emerging arena for advocacy for our work and we are committed to strengthening the bonds of solidarity between Hong Kong and Taiwan in the months and years ahead.”
