Hong Kong Watch held a roundtable discussion on the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) in the Canadian Parliament on Thursday 23 November. The discussion was hosted by Tom Kmiec MP, Shadow Minister for Immigration and Vice-Chair of the Canada-China Relations Special Committee. Members of Parliament in attendance included Greg McLean MP, Arnold Viersen MP, Brad Vis MP, Dan Muys MP and Dave Epp MP, as well as the office assistants of Senator Marilou McPhedran, Senator Leo Housakos, Melissa Lantsman MP, Garnett Genuis MP, Rachael Thomas MP, and representatives from the Liberal Party’s Policy Research Department.

The discussion encompassed a wide range of topics related to the MPF issue, including the context surrounding the denial of British National Overseas (BNO) status. The significant role played by Canadian companies was also emphasised, particularly in relation to the MPF protest held in front of Manulife’s headquarters in Toronto.

Furthermore, the arrest of 20 Hong Kongers, including a Sun Life insurance agent, was thoroughly examined during the discussion. The recommendations put forward by the United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC) regarding the MPF were also considered, along with the latest updates from Hong Kong Watch’s meetings with Global Affairs Canada and the Department of Finance Canada.

Notably, Greg McLean MP took the initiative to draft a motion for a hearing at one of the committees, further highlighting the importance and urgency of addressing the MPF issue.

週四（23日），香港監察在加拿大國會舉辦強積金（MPF）圓桌研討會。研討會由影子移民部長、加中關係特別委員會副主席Tom Kmiec MP主持，出席議員包括國會議員Greg McLean MP、Arnold Viersen MP、Brad Vis MP、Dan Muys MP和Dave Epp MP，以及參議員Senator Marilou McPhedran、Senator Leo Housakos、國會議員Melissa Lantsman MP、Garnett Genuis MP、Rachael Thomas MP的辦公室助理，還有自由黨政策研究部的代表。

討論囊括了MPF的各方面問題，包括英國國民海外（BNO）持有人被拒絕提取MPF的背景。討論還涉及加拿大金融服務公司所扮演的角色，尤其提到香港人在多倫多宏利總部前舉行的抗議活動。

此外，討論探究了包括一名永明金融保險代理在內的20名香港人被捕事件、美中經濟暨安全檢討委員會（USCC）關於MPF的建議，以及香港監察與加拿大環球事務部和財政部會面的最新進展。

值得注意的是，國會議員Greg McLean MP起草了一份動議，提議其中一個國會委員會召開聽證會。他表示，聽證會將提供平台，讓受影響的香港人和相關利益團體能夠分享經歷和觀點，並向政府提出建議和解決方案。
