Bloomberg: "China Is Blocking Fleeing Hong Kongers From Getting Their Retirement Money"
On 19 August 2021, Johnny Patterson, Policy Director of Hong Kong Watch was quoted in a Bloomberg news report.
The report says tens of thousands flee Hong Kong for a new life in the U.K. will be forced to leave behind their retirement savings (MPF) as China intensifies its crackdown on the city’s freedoms.
Commenting on this, Johnny Patterson said:
“This MPF policy seems to be designed to stop both the free movement of people and the free movement of capital. And that then undermines a number of the qualities which have set Hong Kong apart from the mainland and obviously in the long run that’s not going to help its standing as a business hub.”
