Chairs of Foreign Affairs Committees from 4 Countries calls for a UN Special Envoy and UN Special Rapporteur on Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Watch have been involved in initiating international calls for a UN Special Envoy and UN Special Rapporteur on Hong Kong.
In late May, we worked to push for a joint call from a range of Parliamentarians including Lord Patten, Baroness Kennedy, and the chairs of the Foreign Affairs Committees of Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK for this. In the letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations, the chairs said that they have each written to their respective Prime Ministers “to ask that they actively collaborate in order that the United Nations Human Rights Council approve a mandate for the establishment of a United Nations Special Envoy to Hong Kong.”
Benedict Rogers, the group’s chair, said a UN envoy could help “prevent a terrible disaster unfolding” in Hong Kong. “As we approach the anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre, the world must do everything possible to help de-escalate the situation, protect human rights and prevent a similar tragedy recurring in Hong Kong,” he said.
