In March 2020, Hong Kong Watch’s Director Johnny Patterson and one of our Trustees Aileen Calverley met with six congressional offices to share our new report "Why Hong Kong Matters" and its findings. These offices included: Senator Chuck Grassley, Senator Pat Toomey, Senator Jeff Merkley, Rep. Steve Chabot, Rep. Joaquin Castro and Rep. John Curtis. They also met with Rep. Ted Yoho who appreciated the report analysis and agreed to host a seminar in June for the report launch in the US and at the same time marking the anniversary of the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

Our team presented the report to the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC)'s Executive Director and Economic and Trade team, staffers from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC). They received the report and the findings with great interest. The USCC representatives agreed that it was important to correct the misperception in the public imagination that Hong Kong no longer matters.

Finally,  our team met with the State Department Regional Unit Chief of the Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs, David Fuller, who was informed of the plans for the report last year and was pleased to receive our findings and recommendations.
