WATCH: In Conversation with Benedict Rogers. New episode with Jimmy Lai
We are honoured to have Jimmy Lai, founder of Apple Daily, as our guest in the new episode of "In Conversation with Benedict Rogers" interview series.
In the episode Jimmy told us how he was 'smuggled' on a fishing boat from China to Hong Kong at the age of 12 and how the freedoms of Hong Kong transformed him from a child labour to who he is today. He also told us why he founded Apple Daily in Hong Kong when he was 40 and all the challenges and intimidation faced by him and people who work with him.
Here are some remarks that Jimmy shared with Hong Kong Watch:
"By delivering information, you are delivering liberty."
"If we don't have news, would the world forget about us? If the world forgets about us, we'll be in big trouble. Because the world's voice and support is our only saving grace."
"The reason we fight is because we share the same values of the free world, which is the legacy of our British colonial past. The British did not give us [Hong Kong] democracy, but the rule of law, the freedom of speech, the private property rights, the freedom of assembly, religion and institution, all the freedoms that we grew up with."
"Hong Kong matters because we are in the frontiers fighting for the values that the free world shares with us."
