Statement: Hong Kong Watch condemn arrest of Tony Chung and two other activists under the NSL

We condemn the arrest of Tony Chung and two other activists under the National Security Law today. The National Security Law is an appalling assault on Hong Kong's fundamental freedoms and the rule of law which introduces vague thought crimes and excessive sentencing into Hong Kong's legislation. The arrests are the latest example of Beijing acting in violation of international law and their human rights commitments.

The arrests demonstrate the need for a special UN envoy for Hong Kong to monitor the situation on the ground and report accurate and regular information on the deteriorating human rights situation to the international community. Governments should consider applying sanctions against those responsible for the rapid deterioration of human rights in the city.
